The northern spotted owl is dependent on complex, old-growth forest systems in order to build their nests. Every year, QVIR Environmental Department staff performs owl hooting surveys in the Salmon Mountains, one of the last-known breeding grounds of the species, to ensure that fire management thinning does not disturb any nearby nesting sites.
